Driving & Distance

10 Free Yards Without Touching Your Swing

You know the feeling. You take a big rip at the driver, everything fires at once, and the ball goes nowhere good. Weak slice, pull hook, or one of those dead blocks that starts right and stays right. So you swing harder. Same result, just faster.

Here is what is actually happening. The moment your backswing ends, you yank. Shoulders, arms, hands, all pulling down at the ball like you are starting a lawnmower. When you do that, you jump right out of the stretch your backswing just built. The club never gets a chance to drop into the slot, so you lose the lag, the speed, and the strike. All in the first six inches of the downswing.

The fix is not a swing change. It is a transition feel, and it is simpler than you think. Ease out of the top the same way you ease out of a toe touch. You do not jerk up from a toe touch. You let your body unwind smooth. Same thing here. At the top, let gravity start the club down. Just let it fall. Then, once the shaft drops to about ground parallel, accelerate through. That is the whole move. Gravity starts it, you finish it.

Try it as a drill first. Take your driver to the range. At the top of the backswing, pause for a half second. Feel the club get heavy. Let it drop with gravity instead of pulling it. Once the shaft reaches ground parallel, then go. Hit a few balls like this and watch what happens to your contact. The strike gets cleaner, the ball flight gets stronger, and the distance shows up without you swinging any harder. Those are your free yards.

One mistake to avoid. When golfers hear "ease" and "let gravity," they slow everything down, including the hit. They turn the whole swing into a lazy loop and wonder why the ball goes shorter. The ease is only at the top. The acceleration still happens. It just happens later, from ground parallel through the ball, instead of from the top. Late speed beats early effort every time.

Let gravity start it. Accelerate later. Free yards.
