Ball Striking

Relax Your Right Shoulder Like You Are Walking, Not Swinging

Watch yourself walk. Your arms hang loose, your shoulders swing smooth and easy, like a pendulum. Now watch most golfers at the top of the backswing. The right shoulder is tight, loaded, and ready to fire. That tension wrecks everything.

A tight right shoulder destroys your cadence and your transition. From the top, a fast or tense right shoulder drives the club over the top or flips it at the bottom. The path goes wrong, the contact goes thin or heavy, and you wonder why the swing that felt powerful produced a weak ball flight.

The fix is simple. Keep the right shoulder loose from the top. When the shoulder stays soft, the club stays on plane, the transition smooths out, and the contact gets crisp. Power in golf comes from sequence and speed, not from muscling it with your trail side.

Try the Walking Shoulder Swing. Walk a few steps and let your arms and shoulders hang loose and swing naturally. Feel that rhythm in your shoulders, easy and unforced. Now take that same loose right-shoulder feel into your golf swing. From the top, keep the shoulder soft instead of driving it forward. Hit a few balls and watch how the path and contact clean up when you stop forcing it.

The common mistake is equating effort with power. The harder you try to hit it with your right side, the worse it gets. Loose is fast. Tight is slow.

Loose right shoulder. Smooth cadence. On-plane contact.
