Scheffler's Safe Play: How to Handle Odd Yardages Over Water

Sixty-six yards. Water all the way to a tight green. This is the shot that ruins rounds. You know the chunk is in there. You know the thin is in there too, screaming over the green into the junk behind it. So you stand over the ball thinking about everything except the shot, and then you hit exactly what you were afraid of.

Scottie Scheffler plays these shots with what people call boring golf, and boring golf wins majors. He does not try to be a hero. He adds margin. Instead of firing at a tight pin over water, he plays past it, to the fat part of the green or the back edge. The worst outcome becomes a long putt instead of a penalty stroke. That is not conservative. That is smart.

The second half of the play is arriving early. Grab two or three clubs and your rangefinder before you even get to the ball. Find your low point with practice swings somewhere safe, outside the hazard, so you never risk chunking one into the water during your warmup. Keep your grip pressure steady, take one solid rehearsal swing, step in, and execute. No guessing. No hoping.

Practice it with the Arrive Early drill. On the range, set up a fake hazard with alignment sticks or cones. Walk up, grab two or three clubs, and take two or three practice swings behind the hazard line to groove your low point. Then step in, take one rehearsal swing, and hit the shot 5 to 10 yards past your target. Do it 8 to 10 times. You are building the habit of never guessing your low point over trouble.

The mistake that kills this strategy: taking your rehearsal swings inside the hazard. I see it all the time. A golfer finds the water, takes three practice swings that chunk the bank, then wonders why the real swing does the same thing. Your practice swings program your low point. Program it somewhere safe.

Smart margin beats hero shots every time. Aim past the pin, arrive early, and let the boring play save you strokes.
