Putting Distance Control: Hit the Putt on the Way Back

Three-putts do not come from bad reads. They come from bad speed. You can read a 12-footer perfectly and still leave it four feet short or blast it four feet by, and the round slowly bleeds out one lag putt at a time.

Here is the secret the best putters in the world already know. Cameron Smith has talked about it, and Tiger Woods has said the same thing in his own way: the speed of the putt is set in the backswing. You are basically hitting the putt on the way back. The forward stroke just delivers what the backswing ordered.

Think about why that matters. Most amateurs do the opposite. They take the putter back some random distance and then try to manufacture speed on the way through, hitting at the ball. That is where the inconsistency lives. The fix is simple: make your forward stroke identical every single time, same rhythm, same smooth pendulum, and control distance only by changing how far back you take the putter. Longer backswing, longer putt. Shorter backswing, shorter putt. One variable instead of two.

Tiger added the other half of the idea. The ball itself slows the putter head down at impact, so you do not need to decelerate or steer anything. Just let the putter swing through and the ball does the braking for you. The result is pure end-over-end roll instead of the skidding, hopping mess most amateurs produce.

Practice it like this. Set up to putts between 6 and 12 feet. Forget the hole for a minute and focus only on backswing length. Take the putter back different distances while keeping the forward stroke smooth and identical in rhythm. Hit 10 to 15 putts and judge the speed purely by the backswing. You will feel the distance control lock in fast.

The common mistake: trying to guide the putter with your hands on the way through. The moment you steer, the rhythm dies. Trust the backswing to do the work.

Takeaway: control putting distance with your backswing length. Hit the putt on the way back, let the ball slow the putter naturally, and watch the roll get pure.
