Never Miss Another 10-Footer: Read the Break Like a Pro

Here is a painful truth about putting: it is not the twenty-five footers that ruin your score. It is the ten to twelve footers. The ones you expect to make. You stand over them, you pick a line that looks right, you make a decent stroke, and the ball slides by on the low side. Again. Most golfers practice straight putts or huge breakers. The subtle ones are the silent killers.

The problem is not your stroke. It is your read. You are guessing at the break instead of measuring it. And on a ten-footer, guessing wrong by two inches is a missed putt.

This drill takes the guesswork out. Stretch a string in a straight line from your ball to just behind the hole, raised a few inches off the ground on two sticks. Roll a ball under the string and watch how far it breaks. Mark that exact amount on a ruler. Now move the string to the high side of the hole by exactly that measured amount. That string is your true start line. Stroke your putts with the blade traveling directly under the string, twenty to thirty times.

What this trains is the one skill that separates good putters from frustrated ones: starting the ball on the correct line and trusting the break to bring it in. Most amateurs aim at the hole on a breaking putt and then subconsciously steer the putter to compensate. That never works. When you can see the real start line on the high side, you learn to start it there with confidence and let gravity do its job. The putt drops because the read was right, not because the stroke was lucky.

The one mistake to avoid: setting the string and then still peeking at the hole and steering. The whole point of the drill is to take your eyes off the outcome and put them on the process. Blade under the string. Start line is the string. Trust it for all twenty to thirty reps. The trust you build on the practice green is what shows up on the course.

Stop guessing the break on ten-footers. Measure it with the string, set your line on the high side, and stroke it under the string. Those putts start falling.
